Queues
Table of Contents
Queues contain a prioritized list of tasks, and a task can belong to only one queue at a time. A queue gives clear ownership for tasks and helps operators decide how to batch and sequence work.
Each queue has an owner. Factorial tracks and displays throughput and work in progress (WIP) over time.
Scheduling
A queue has a name and an optional description, and may define task filters. When a task is ready to enter a queue, Factorial evaluates the filters for every queue. If multiple queues match, Factorial assigns the task to the queue with the least queued work. This least-busy policy balances work across eligible queues.
A default queue configured on the procedure step overrides filter-based scheduling. Tasks created from that step enter the default queue directly.
Usage
Queues are often associated with a workstation, but this is not required. Multiple people may pull work from the same queue. Tasks can be reordered to reflect priority; queues do not require first-in-first-out execution.
A queue opens as an ordered list. Use the view toggle to switch to a Kanban board. When a task is completed or canceled, it exits the queue.
The list view hides completed and canceled tasks, as does the tasks page. Turn on Show completed or Show canceled to include them. Filtering by status shows the selected statuses regardless of these toggles, and filtering by who completed or canceled a task shows those tasks. The Kanban board shows every status.
Archiving
Queues are archived, not deleted, so finished tasks keep the queue they went through. Only a queue without open tasks can be archived: move or finish its To do and In progress tasks first. Archive one queue from its row, or several from the bulk actions menu.
An archived queue leaves the queues page and every queue picker, and no task or step can be put in it. Its own page still opens and lists its tasks. Reopening one of its finished tasks moves the task to Unassigned. Turn on Show archived on the queues page to find it, and restore it to use it again. A saved view of the queues page remembers the toggle.
